What Are The Different CDL Categories Available?

Commercial vehicles are classified under class A, Class B and Class C. This is a quick reference so that you know what things to ask for or so that you understand what category your interest lies.

Class A commercial vehicles: Combi Vehicles (e.g. a tractor trailer) with a Gross Vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, or towing another vehicle with GVWR of more than 10,000 pounds.

Class B Commercial Vehicles: A single vehicle having a GVWR of about 26,000 pounds or more, or towing another vehicle with GVWR in excess of 10,000 pounds. These include school buses and church buses.

Class C Commercial vehicles: These types includes vehicles that are licensed to transport hazardous materials and those that carry 16 or more people.

Each Category Requires A Different Training Requirement

Depending on your final choice, you can be required to take a training that is tailored to suit the category. The training required certain minimum hours of theoretical lessons and practical lessons covering the different aspects of driving. For instance, the total amount of hours needed to complete class A training in Washington state is as follows:

160 hours of training will be required
40 hours of these for theory
18 hours for street driving lessons
16 hours for backing moves
16 hours for proficiency and skills development
70 hours for range training, keen observations skill development and lab training

After finding what is involved in the training, start looking around for top level schools where you will be able to get the required training from. The right spot to look for is for state boards and other regulatory bodies that offer information on driving licenses.
